By "smaller", I mean they appear more compressed. The lighter hues along the opposite edge have the effect of "opening up" the white dots positioned near them. 😉

I think it's such an interesting optical illusion how the pairs of white dots along the left side (vertically) appear smaller than their symmetrical counterparts, especially when viewing the pattern horizontally. Obviously it's because they're surrounded by darker colors than those on the opposite side... but it's cool. 😄 😎
