@skyl3rspac that is so cool! this is def a language I would love to learn. My father's people are likely descendants of the Maya, and I've been trying to learn more about the various Mayan peoples, ancient culture, and of special interest, I'd like learn why our creation story varies so much because it is obvious we came from that area. Anyhoo, thanks for the chat!

@fluffers I appreciate the kind comments! I will admit that I know very little about the language myself, beyond the research I did to put this together. the friend I made this for has a PhD in ancient Mayan linguistics, & I was worried I would accidentally put nonsense in the pattern since I couldn't rely on their expertise to check the design for mistakes 😅 the drawbacks of a surprise gift!

@skyl3rspac Thanks so much for trying to help. =) I know almost nothing about Maya. I know that there are syllabograms and logograms. Logograms are pictures that represent a word. Syllabograms are pictures that represent sounds. ~~I think~~ If that is correct, the the hand that you use here would be a logogram - representing a word. ??? But the hand with a finger touching the thumb would also be a sound when used as a syllabogram, if I understand what I've read about this stuff, which I likely so not! Either way, or regardless of all that, your pattern is FANTASTIC! I love it. I love Maya pictographs/glyphs/whatever they are called. You did a great job putting all of this together as a piece of art. |

@fluffers after checking with my friend - the opposing swirls on either side of the tzutz symbol could be interpreted as "fire", but it is mostly geometric filler (thankfully, as this was the intention)

@fluffers the symbol in the middle is tzutz. it's a hand holding a bobbin. it means "to end" or "to complete" & it's my friend's favorite glyph. I am unaware of any meaning behind the rest of the designs - I referenced pottery & wall carvings, & did my best to only use background or filler designs, but I may be misinformed.

This is fantastic! But I give up. I'm trying to translate, and the only part I can get is "ye" (assuming this is a reversed image). What does this say?
