Hi! Mostly a question for moderators, but anyone who knows the rules would be great!I've been loving making patterns lately and am trying to figure out what I can and cannot turn into a pattern. Obviously you dont make any money from patterns on this website so does it just all fall into fair use? I've seen plenty of Disney patterns for example that I'm assuming didn't reach out to Disney to get permission, so does that mean as long as you give credit its fine? I've just seen some really cool illustrations and flash tattoos and posters etc that I'd love to make into a pattern and share but am trying to figure out the rules. Thanks so much! |

I think how it works is that you can’t use someone’s own artwork and make it as a pattern of your own, but if you use official artwork (like from Disney) that’s ok because official art that you have made into a pattern of your own, that’s ok because it isn’t as if you are claiming the character or image you use as your on (like if I made a Mickey Mouse pattern based on his official artwork, it isn’t as if I was saying that I made it myself, but I have permission to use it since it isn’t me exploiting it as my own, if you get what I’m saying). Just make sure if you’re basing a pattern on something you’ve seen online, first make sure you have permission to use it for your pattern, then make sure no-one has already made the pattern already and posted it here. Maybe the mods can explain better than I can, but hope this helps!

yeah i think things that are like generally well known (like disney etc) are usually fine without crediting, imo patterns based on more niche art or fanart thats not your own should be credited wherever possible (although i don’t think anyone’s following that up as an official rule but just out of respect to the artist). i would draw the line at e.g. pixel art, already made patterns (on other websites, crochet patterns, crosstitch patterns etc) without consent from the creator or any art that they’ve explicitly said not to be used for anything else. basically js give credit unless it’s well known or dont post if they’ve said not to (thats my take anyways)
