You don't have to use your scrap thread for patterns, you can even use them for alpha base strings. I make as my 1st project #60174 (I haven't started it yet, my parents and me were the whole day in parndorf (shopping outlet) and then I managed to do #117 instead) and used scrap thread for the beginning.You can use this for every pattern (alpha).
