yesterday in English we had a timed essay assignment
it went pretty well and then at the end of class we had to staple our essay papers tgth along with our outline (it all had to be handwritten)
and so I turn it in to my teacher and she goes (in a very aghast and kinda condescending tone)
"MY GOSH (my name) this is chicken scratch! You need to work on this (my handwriting)!! I don't know if I'm going to be able to read this, you might need to stay after school to rewrite it!"
And I just kinda go ok
but its really upset me. i spent most of yesterday after school trying to get over it cuz Ive always had "bad" handwriting and she was probably right, I mean I was under time pressure and everyone's handwriting gets worse. Then I told my mom about and she was shocked and I finally realized that WTH.
A lot of girls my age (teen) have very nice and even handwriting but that's NEVER been me. My handwritings loopy and slanted and uneven-I had to go to occupational therapy for YEARS to get it better and I remember in middle school one of my teachers was similarly mean about it. I think incredibly fast and my hands can't keep up. Sometimes I accidentally skip words or letters because my internal monologue is already on the next sentence of what I should put. But i've finally gotten to a point where I LIKE my handwriting. I think its nice if a bit crazed at times as it shows my mind whorling about. but now I feel bad about it. its NOT nice or even like my peers. it slants and has both sharp angles and big loops. and maybe it is ugly.

side note: my mom thinks I should email her about it but idk what I'd say.

That sounds needlessly cruel on the part of your teacher, and I realize just how much that can sting (especially if it was a public dressing down, which is what it sounds like). I would encourage you to try not to take it too personally, though--I sometimes fantasize about having the opportunity to pow-wow one on one with quite a few pedagogues from my "dear old golden rule" days, and I don't encourage bearing that sort of mental baggage in others if we can help it. ❤️‍🩹

If you acknowledge that your handwriting might be difficult for others to read, and if you aren't interested in pursuing a medical career (where it seems to be a prerequisite...), maybe this incident can be the moment that galvanizes us to improve that? We may indeed like the way we write, but that won't do us any good if our grades might be on the line because of it. If it's advice you're after and not just a sympathetic ear, would you be up to the challenge of learning and practicing "block letter" handwriting?

Getting proficient in this style and being able to switch it on mentally when we need it might be a handy, and very achievable skill to have. "Separating church and state": we can make ourselves crystal clear when it counts. With practice, we can be just about as fast as our default freestyle handwriting. Personally, it's *been* my default since boot camp.

Hope this helps. At the risk of oversharing, I'm a little blue myself tonight--on this day many years ago, my big sister was made seventeen forever. When it's my time, she's the first person I wanna see again. 😇

Supplemental stuff. I like the cut of her jib:

(It might help to think of it as an art form in itself, much like bracelet making. 👍)
