Hello everyone! I am 19 years old, turning 20 this year 🙈 and have found myself feeling quite lonely recently. I live in a small village in England and have always lived in the countryside which I love, but it makes it very difficult to meet new people. Since finishing college, I only ever leave the house for work and am not really close with anyone I went to college with. I work in a cinema so I do get to chat with customers and my colleagues at work but that's the only time I get to really socialise with anyone. If anyone has any tips or advice on how to make friends and meet new people then please let me know! If anyone wants to make friends with me then of course I'd be happy to chat with you! 😊

If you do any sports or have any other hobbies, you could join a club for it. You can often meet likeminded people there.

Try taking a class for something that you are interested in. It can be anything - an art class, crochet or knitting, soap making, fishing, boating, cycling, dance, other sports. You will likely find people with similar interests. I once joined a bocce ball league - it was really fun! I see you do photography. There are often local groups who share work and constructive feedback. You could find (or even start) a group of people who meet somewhere interesting, take photos for a couple hours, and then share their work. Are there talks at the local library or book store? Is there a local museum or botanical garden where you can volunteer? Does the local yarn store have open hours where you can bring your WIPs and speak with people? Have you checked out Meetup?

I find quite a few of my friends online. My best friend i actually met online and we have met up countless times in person. She lives about 6 hours away now so we dont meet up as often anymore. But I'd say check out some places like Meetup that was mentioned before.

Random question: When you say college, are you talking about the UK version of high school? Or University? Dumb American here.

@emiliecw Thank you so much for the suggestions! I will definitely have a look at what local classes/clubs are available. I love the idea of meeting up with local photographers for photoshoot sessions. That would be a great way to get to know other photographers in the area. I haven't heard of Meetup before so I will check it out!

@floppycat7 In the UK, we finish high school when we are 16 and then go to college until we are 18 or 19. In high school we do maths, english, sciences etc and then when you go to college you choose what course you do. I did a photography course but there are loads of different courses like childcare, engineering, cookery, art, hair and beauty. After you finish college you can either go to university for a degree or go into employment.

I think the idea is that you can go to college and get a qualification for the sector you want to work in and then get a job without needing to go to university.

Hope this makes sense 😅
