Washing dishes and scrubbing pans for minimum wage. Never was pretty enough for "front of house" staff. When I retired from the military, part of the seemingly endless out-processing was the various and sundry classes on career shopping and the pressure to "hit the ground running" once you're finally DD-214 positive (the "I'm free, don't bug me anymore" paper). At one point when one of the presenters put me on the spot and wanted me to share with everyone else what my next professional move was, I sighed and from the bottom of my heart let it be known that I'd been employed since I was 15 and would very much just like to try being a shiftless bum for a while. |

My first real job was (and still is) working as a pool lifeguard during the summer. If you are a good swimmer and you can manage to get your certification, I can highly recommend it. There is always a need for lifeguards and you are basically paid for people-watching. Some people can be rude or have a lack of understanding for the rules they need to follow, but most swimmers are nice. Plus I get free entry at the pool I work at, so I don't need to pay when I want to go swimming. Before that I had done a volunteer year at a day care center. My job was grocery shopping, picking the kids up from school and bringing them to the day care center, helping in the groups by preparing food or helping the kids with their homework and on one day some cleaning. It was a nice experience and afterwards I was really sure that I wanted to work with kids. |

My first job was at a survey call center. It was an okay job. Most people wouldn't answer their phones or would hang up. Anyways I ended up getting another job 3 months later in an elementary school working as a teacher's aid. And I love it! ❤️
