One of the first "classic" novels I read was The Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man by James Joyce (1916), which I really reccomend 🙂 It's the book that really changed my life and allowed me to persue literature in my academic career. A "classic" novel can be anything, so don't think of it as a limiting genre. Beloved by Toni Morrison (1987), Frankenstein by Mary Shelley (1818), The Tenant of Wildfell Hall by Anne Brontë (1848), and War Of The Worlds by HG Wells (1890s) are all really exciting, varied books that can all be considered 'classics' in some sense of the word, even with hundreds of years between them - and are all very different genres! And if you're thinking about a long form, capital-n Novel, I'd reccomend something like Moby Dick by Herman Melville (1851), East of Eden by John Steinbeck (1951), The Mill on the Floss by George Eliot (1860), or Don Quixote by Cervantes (1615). Again, all very different novels, and all will give you a totally different idea of what a novel is! 😄 But let me know if you have any particular requests, and maybe we can find something more specific 🙂 |
