How different do patterns need to be?

I am making a variation on the pattern #102026 to allow a changeable background color, as in the original pattern the color of the pupil of the eye has to match the background or there will be a strange dot of the pupil color. I have to change only two knots to hide this color and make the background color work, so it is not a very different pattern than the original, but since we cannot change knots on an existing pattern in a variation, I cannot add this to the site under the original pattern. Is this distinct enough to submit as a new pattern, and do I need to get permission from the creator of the original pattern? I will give credit either way.

Also, does anyone know how to copy the knots structure from an existing pattern so I can add onto it without retyping the whole thing? Or do I just have to copy it manually

Do you have permission from the original creator to modify their pattern?

There is no way to copy existing knot structures.

@krazyknots I have asked permission but have not received a reply yet. I did submit my tweak for verification because I wanted to put it in the generator to have a pattern for it, but I put in the notes field that it was a tweak of this pattern so it should be easy to spot to deny it unless/until I do get permission.

Relatedly, I submitted another pattern that is inspired by #97867 which is a 1212 pattern. I changed this to be possible to segment knot, and had to change most if not all of the knot structure as well as the actual design itself. In the notes I said it was a straightforward tweak of #97867 but it really is not. Since it is significantly changed, I will give credit to the creator of the original pattern as an inspiration, but do I still need to get permission?
