i've seen other people make patterns where there are no knots on some strings in alpha patterns. i know how to do that when making normal patterns, but i don't see an option for it in the alpha pattern generator. is there a way to do it or should i just make it a random background color instead?

The only way to do it that I know is in the first tab "Alpha" (not "Draw alpha" or other).
First you make it a random color, save it, go back to the tab "Alpha" and replace every letter for the background that you chose for zeros.
If there are a lot of them, I recommend using an external tool like this (https://onlinetexttools.com/replace-text-letters) and then copypaste back the result.

Oh, actually I remembered that there is a way to do this in "Draw alpha".
Choose "fill" and right-click on the background. It will make all the knots empty.

The previous user is correct. 😊

You can use 0 on the first page on the big box with, f, b, bf, fb.

Or you can right click on the 'draw' page. 👍

Oops, I mean letters (a, b, c, etc) not fb, be, b, f (*typo 🙈)

Long-clicking will also turn knots into 0-knots in draw alpha. Sometimes this happens accidentally when users are unaware of it and/or use a very light colour that looks similar to 0-knots.

For this reason my recommendation is to change out very light colours for darker colours while designing the pattern and only changing them to the intended light colours at the very end.
