Creating an alpha from image

When ever I import a image to create an alpha, it always shows the pattern with very similar colors (usually scales of gray) even when the photo has different colors. Is there any way to fix that? I play around with change the number a pixels and number of colors to use if that helps with anything. thanks!

You could edit the image itself so it has a higher contrast.
