Why does it immediately add more strings

I'm trying to make a pattern with only 5 strings, but every time I end up getting way more strings than 5. Does anybody know how to stop this? I always put 5 strings in the color order too.

For a five string pattern you need two knots in each row. If you have more than two knots and the knot structure would still be correct with more than five strings the generator adds the "missing" strings.

@halokiwi That is right. The generator looks first at your knot structure and generates the string order from that. If you have extra knots it will add more 'a's to your string order.
