So if I’m not using the straight alpha technique and say my background thread is my leading string and the knot on the edge for the next row needs to be a different color what do I do with my current leading string? ( again I am not using the straight alpha technique)

You can do the same thing as you do when making straight edges, except not making fb or bf knots.

Since it's your background colour I'm assuming you will use it again in the pattern. Once you made the next knot of that colour, it should stop the string from sticking out too much at the edge. Is that your issue?
