Making alpha patterns

Hi I was wondering if someone were to take a picture from Pinterest and use the alpha from image option to make an alpha pattern, and tweak it a little bit, would that be ethical? Would they need permission from the original artist? Or just crediting them in the comments would be enough?(Sorry if i sound stupid, I don’t know the technical terms) |

If you are not taking a pixel art, perler bead patter, cross stitch pattern etc it should be alright because you're transforming something that is not in pixelated form into pixelated form and by tweaking it you add something personal to it. If you know the original artist it would of course be nice if you credited them. |
