Clean back alpha technique: single line of a color going down multiple rows?

For the purpose of this question I'm going to use "horizontal" to mean the direction you're tying, moving across a single *row*, and "vertical" to mean the direction of the base string, all the knots in a so-called *column*.

Let's take #202255 for example. There are straight lines of dark green (color C) running vertically down the length of the pattern. If I were to make this pattern using the clean back alpha technique, using a single green thread for each line (so I wouldn't be carrying it back and forth along the pattern, just using one length of thread for one of the vertical lines), how would I "guide" that individual string? Would I have to guide it back and forth around each knot, hiding it in the knot following it and then bringing it down to the next row? Or can you just let the dark green (color C) thread hang loose, and then tie another knot with it when you get to that point on the next row? Keep in mind, with the clean back alpha technique, the lighter green (color A) is being carried through each of those knots, so it's not like it would separate from the rest of the piece.

Guiding it back and forth would be a pain, but I'm worried that just letting the thread hang loose would make the knots look uneven or ugly. My priority is to have neat knots that are the same shape, so if I have to guide the string back and forth, so be it.
