How long should each string be on an alpha?

The base strings don’t have to be that long, just long enough to tie knots onto. However the string you use for the background should be very long

on a pattern, look how many knots of each colour there are. generally, the fewer knots there are of one colour, the less thread you will need for that colour

base strings will just need to be the final length of the bracelet. the weaving strings depending on how much of it gets used needs to be very long. i usually just keep my weaving strings attached to their skeins and cut them at the end

For the base strings, Don’t make them too short, and don’t make them too long. I use an armlength.
