Alpha Wrong String Count

I wasn't sure if there was a reason why the string count for alpha's is always one string more than the pattern actually needs for base strings. For example my pattern #26408 says it needs 10 base strings but if you actually count the base strings of the pattern you only need 9? There is always a +1 string count on every alpha pattern I've come across on BB and I don't understand why? Thanks!

It counts every string that starts at the top, so it counts the working string too. It’s not a huge deal, but you just have to remember to take that into account because I’ve had a bracelet that i had to slightly modify a bracelet because i accidentally added an extra one

I know to take a string off but I've heard from people making my own patterns and others that they too got confused and did too many and had to start over or make it work. I don't believe this is a great solution and that it should only include the base strings and use the color count as the amount of working strings needed. I hope this makes sense! I just think it needs to be more clear

That’s why the dimensions are listed on a pattern as well. That way you can see how many strings wide the pattern is versus how many strings you need to tie- your base strings plus a knotting string.

Yes like what “Margaron” said, if you look on the pattern it tells you the total number of strings and the dimensions which do not include the base string. I’ve made this mistake before but now I look out for those dimensions to make the correct number of strings
