@mirage, I typically use embroidery floss and multiple different brands of it in fact, but the only other material I use is pearl cotton (DMC) and craft cord which comes in big packs. Embroidery floss is a separable piece of string, it is made up of 6 individual strands that are each twisted on itself, on top of that all 6 twisted strands are woven together to make the full string. As you work with embroidery floss it will separate which can be annoying. Which is why you might want craft cord. Craft cord is string that is twisted upon itself with two strings. It doesn't fray, but if you separate the two strands and pull it will come apart very easily. Pearl cotton is very similar to craft cord, but it is made by DMC. The closest size to regular craft cord is size 5. What I've found is that it is slightly smaller than regular craft cord so keep that in mind. The only other material I use is metallic embroidery floss. I use this very rarely because it separates a lot and is very annoying to work with. However to keep that from happening, I recommend tying a knot at the end of the strand to keep it from fraying. Metallic embroidery floss is also very expensive, and feels very scratchy to wear. The only other material I use is color shifting embroidery thread and craft cord. All the same stuff goes for it as it does above, except that the colors change. i love the prism brand embroidery floss, but i also use some DMC and also some color-shifting sparkly yarn i found at my local craft store
