Ranks increase according to your activity on this website and they give you some small benefits like the ability to use chat, submit more patterns/variations per day and give lower ratings. To increase your rank, you can engage in different sorts of activity like add more patterns to your "loves" and "to-dos", create color variations for the existing patterns, post more photos, write comments, put 5 stars on patterns that you like, comment on topics in the forum that you can contribute to, add more users to your friends, and simply being online also helps you get promoted.
