How do we know how much string to cut for each pattern?

For each pattern there is an amount of strings given next to the |||| symbol.

In normal patterns this is the total amount of strings. You have to look at the pattern and count the strings of each colour to know how many strings of each colour you need.

In alpha patterns this is the number of base strings plus one. You need to cut one less base string than the number given. In addition you need leading strings (one per colour). The amount of colours is given next to the paint roller symbol.

If this is about the length of strings needed, here are tutorials for calculating string length in normal patterns:

For alpha patterns the base strings need to have the length of the bracelet plus some extra for (loops and) ties. The leading strings can't really be calculated, so it is best to leave them on the skein and cut them in the end.

For normal patterns only - if you want to add a tied loop(there are tutorials and videos on how to do this), you cut half the amount of string shown in the pattern info, but each string is double length. Plus, cut one string (the string you will be doing the tied loop with) several inches longer than the rest. Fold the strings in half; this will equal the correct amount of string you need for the pattern. For example, the pattern has 16 strings. 16/2=8, so cut 8 strings, and fold them in half.

If this was too complicated for you, keep this idea in your mind and use it when you're more experienced at making bracelets.

This can work for alphas also - cut the base strings in half amount but double the length. Also, I forgot to add that this does not work for all normal patterns, only ones with 2 strings of each colour.
