how do you keep your bracelets stiff?

I’m not a BEGINNER beginner, but I’ve found that after I finish my bracelet, it doesn’t seem extremely solid. When I see other people’s bracelets, they seem like they’ll stay flat and straight (idk how to explain). Like I make them fine and tighten the knots enough, but how do I make it stay like that?

I’d like to add that my bracelets don’t curl or bend weird, they just don’t keep that straight, nice-looking way.

What sort of material are you using? Not all strands are created equal.

If you'll pardon a shameless plug, all of the photos of the wares on my profile are made with fairly thick, 100% cotton thread, which in my opinion is the best stuff I can readily get for the job here in Thailand (was a HUGE fanboy of DMC Cotton Perle size 3, but it's prohibitively pricey for me now). It makes a seriously thick final product, and holds a nice, tight knot with minimal risk of snapping during the process. 👍

When you say the bracelet isn’t straight, do you mean that it curves to the left or the right as you make it? If that’s the issue, you could try experimenting with knot tension. I’ve personally had this issue with alphas, and I try to fix it by doing a looser knot at one end and gradually tightening the knots as I go down the row, until all the rows are straight. I haven’t done this with normal bracelets though, so I’m not sure if it would work the same.

@GiuseppeK I use DMC embroidery floss. I don’t really want to switch now that I have a whole collection of that brand, but if that’s the problem maybe I will. Thank you!

@_haileyom_ my bracelets stay straight down the middle, but thank you for that advice! Sorry it’s just hard to find the right words I guess - but I really appreciate the help. I guess what I’m thinking about comes with experience or something.

@blu3_m00n I do feel ya on that one. I've got myself an entire basket full of various and sundry cords, threads and flosses I'm managed to accumulate over the years. For the most part, I use it to teach kiddos for the once in a blue moon occasions when one of them wishes to learn the ways of the Force for themselves.

That's always a joy to teach others--I'm not gonna be around forever, after all.

How stiff or soft a bracelet is, depends on how tight or loose you tie.

Tying tighter, knots closer together = stiffer bracelet
Tying more loosely, knots further apart = softer bracelet
