Can You Use Different Size String For Base For Alpha Pattern?

I have an overabundance of a red yarn string that I think is for needle tatting (not tattooing,) and I was just wondering if I could use it as a base and use regular string on it?

Yes, you can. I would recommend using string that is a bit thicker than regular embroidery thread. This way the knots will be more square and less elongated.
