How do you determine how much blank space is needed before starting your pattern

For me 85 rows are perfect for an alpha pattern.Lets say a pattern has 45 rows. That means 40 (85-45) rows are missing for 85 rows. For this pattern I would need 20 (40:2) empty rows before and after the design. |
