too short base strings! how to fix it?

hello, I’ve recently picked up knotting again and I, intelligently, forgot how to read dimensions and accidentally made the base strings for a keychain way too short. I did not notice until far into the pattern. is there anyway to save it, like somehow merging the threads like you do in crochet…? thanks in advance for any help!
