Ive seen a lot of people use this technique but I’m not really sure what it does does it help make the pattern bigger?

It makes the knots rounder or more square-ish. This makes the pattern look not as stretched as it would if you used a single base string.Knotting on a single base string can make the knots longer than wider, hence the stretched look. A wider base string to knot on reduces that happening. |
