what does the arrow that goes down and then turns at an angle mean? I thought that it meant to go backwards then forwards or forwards then backwards but I'm not sure...

They’re forward-backward or backward-forward knots. Basically half of each type of knot on one knot

@alexaaaaa If your bracelets have a lot of holes, you just have to make sure you’re tying all the knots the same so they’re all equally tight.
