around how long is the string used to make that loop?

For a loop make the string about 1 1/2 feet longer then your other strings.

I usually don't cut the strings I'm gonna use for the loop and start the loop,after it reaches the desired size, I extend it for the other strings and cut it (hope this is understandable)
