Made this, and it worked very well for my first pattern to follow! I found that you need about wingspan of the background colour (doubled over) and about 30cm more than that for the fish colour, as this string has to tie more knots.
abi1999, I couldn't really tell you, I typically would wrap it around my arm I think twice and then double it over for each string. But I measure very weirdly.
